The Shining

A 1980 masterpiece of the horror/thriller genre, 'The Shining' begins with a retired teacher named Jack Torrance, played by veteran actor Jack Nicholson, interviewing for a job at the Overlook Hotel and learning that he must work during the winter months when the hotel is closed. The movie is about the metaphysical events that unfold after Jack moves into the hotel with his family. Jack, who is also planning to write a book, sees the job at this hotel, which is completely silent during the winter months because of the snow, as an opportunity and comes to the hotel with his wife Wendy and his child Danny. Jack's young son, who has a supernatural intuition, gradually realizes that they are not alone in the hotel, that they live with ghosts from the past and the future, and tries to convince his family of this. Meanwhile, the hotel manager and the chef Dick show them around the hotel, show them the kitchen and introduce them to the surroundings.

Dick, the cook, has traits like Danny, and he and Danny get to know each other by chatting about these things. Thanks to these traits, Danny realizes that there is something wrong in the hotel. There are murders that took place in the hotel years ago and the ghosts of these murders are still in the hotel. Dick knows this and Danny feels it too. Then everyone leaves the hotel and Jack and his family are left alone. The first months in the very large hotel pass smoothly and after 6 months their mission will be over. During this time, Danny has seen the ghosts of two sisters who were murdered in the hotel and the ghost of an old woman who died in the bathroom, but his family has not yet witnessed such situations. We can say that the stedicam shooting technique used by Stanley Kubrick in these scenes is one of the building blocks of the movie. In this way, those scenes could be shot longer and the dose of tension was greatly increased.

As the days go by, Jack begins to lose his sanity and begins to communicate with the ghosts inside the hotel. When the family is stranded in the hotel in the mountains during a snowstorm, Jack is possessed by supernatural beings and slowly begins to lose his mind. Although Stephen King received a lot of backlash for not being faithful to the novel, Stanley Kubrick's filming and the performances of the actors, especially Jack Nicholson, made this movie a cult favorite. We recommend everyone to watch this masterpiece that lovers of thriller movies will absolutely adore.
